Training
Each lesson in Buah Pukul is opened and subsequently closed with some form of Islamic Supplication consisting of Dua, reading a Surah of the Quran, reading a Hadith, or Dhikr. The practice of Islam is a fundamental element of many style in south-east Asia, this is normally to remind all participants the reason for training in self-defence and to protect the class from any ill intent whilst training.
Training in Buah Pukul Mersing consists of 5 stages.
The first stage consists of the student following the teacher with strict discretion, performing daily Islamic prayers, and learning a set of forms called Lian.

Lian are fundamental of Buah Pukul Mersing and through constant and repetitive practice, the practitioner will gain
the body mechanics and the understandings of the style. Lian are considered a form of kuntau. Once the first 7 Lian are completed the student is then required to read 28 requisites. This is a list of duties, caracteristics and mental attributes the student is required to strive towards and implement. After they have been read a feast is held to celebrate the transition and only then the student is allowed to progress on to the combative application of the Lian called Buah. |
The Buah are the combat applications put into practice on a person in real-time. Buah are normally practiced with the help of another practitioner; this allows the student to polish their skills against an opponent, whilst at the same time conditioning their body, training reflexes and timing of the technique. There are many Buah in the the style of Buah Pukul Mersing, as there are many Buah there are as many Jurus.
The Jurus are the combat applications performed alone without another person. The Jurus are practiced alone in order for the practioner to concentrate on refining the technique in their own time.
Gradings of the students are usually very common and demonstrated behind closed doors in front of the teacher and possibly with other fellow practitioners of the same school. A grading is usually required at every interval in order for the student to progress. The teacher will assess the student during the grading and will decide weather or not the student is permitted to progress onto the next sequence or knowledge.
In Buah Pukul Mersing there is no outward hierarchy in forms of belt systems, the practitioners progression is
purely through understanding and the relationship between the practitioner and the teacher. Akin to this there
is no official Buah Pukul uniform, although students of many schools train in black trousers and a white top with possibly their school's logo/teachers name on.
